Talking Points:
Louisiana can't afford to operate under this antiquated law. Louisiana needs as many providers as possible available to care for the 1.4 million Medicaid patients. Without removal of the collaborative practice agreement, nurse practitioners may see additional barriers to care. There are already physicians who are refusing referrals, requiring only a physician signature to clear for surgery and ending their collaboration with nurse practitioners.
These issues further restrict patient access to care. Louisiana needs more providers and while this doesn't solve the issue, it provides a portion of the solution.
According to those opposed to HB495, patient safety will be compromised if restrictive barriers to practice are removed. Let’s look at Colorado, who has granted full practice authority to NPs since 2009. Between 2009 and 2019, the evidence shows that adverse action reports against NPs in Colorado are less than 0.019% compared to physicians, based on the National Practitioner Data Bank.
